Wai’alae School Admissions & Enrollment: 2012-2013 SY

If your residence is within Wai`alae School’s “district”, we are your “home school”.  The registration process for “in-district” students are as follows:

If you would like to enroll your child in KINDERGARTEN / JUNIOR KINDERGARTEN for the 2012-2013 school year:

Registration Packets will be available beginning in mid February 2012.  To obtain a Registration Packet, please bring:

  • student’s ORIGINAL State certified birth certificate
  • two proofs of residency (examples: deed, property tax assessment, renter’s agreement, utility bill – such as electric, gas, water – showing your address)
  • parent’s valid photo identification

As of November 2011, children with birthdates from January 1, 2007 to August 1, 2007 are eligible for Kindergarten in the 2012-2013 school year.  Children with birthdates from August 2, 2007 to December 31, 2007 will be enrolled in “Junior Kindergarten” in the 2012-2013 school  year.  For the 2012-2013 school year, Junior Kindergarten enrollment will be limited to ten students.

Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis for “in-district” Kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten students, on a space available basis.

 

If you would like to enroll your child in GRADE 1,2,3,4, or 5 for the 2012-2013 school year:

Registration Packets will be available beginning in June 2012.  To obtain a Registration Packet, please bring

  • a “release” from the school that your child is attending in the 2011-2012 school year
  • student’s ORIGINAL State-certified birth certificate
  • two proofs of residency (examples: deed, property tax assessment, renter’s agreement, utility bill – such as electric, gas, water – showing your address)
  • parent’s valid photo identification

 

If your residence is not within Wai`alae School’s “district”, you must first apply for a Geographic Exception and be accepted by Wai`alae School.

  • Obtain, complete, and submit a Geographic Exception (G.E.) application form AND attend one of our Wai`alae School orientations.
  • G.E. application forms are available at State of Hawaii public schools, or you can download a form from the State of Hawaii Department of Education website:

  • Submit the G.E. application form to your “home school”.  Please remember to attach a self-addressed, stamped envelope.  Your home school will assign your child a Student I.D. number and will then forward your G.E. application form to us.  Wai`alae School accepts G.E. application forms from January 1 through March 1, for the following school year, so please submit your G.E. application form to your home school in sufficient time for them to send the form to us by the March 1st deadline.

After March 1st, a waitlist is established by randomly pulling names from among all of the qualified G.E. applications, and after considering priority applications*.

  • If there are more G.E. applicants than we have enrollment spaces available, acceptance to Wai`alae will be based on the waitlist, after priorities* are considered.  Families will be accepted (and notified) in the order of their position on the waitlist, until all enrollment spaces are filled.
  • If there are more enrollment spaces available than we have G.E. applicants, all applicants will be notified of their acceptance.

 

*Based on current policies, priorities are given to G.E. applicants who have a sibling enrolled at Wai`alae School in the current (2011-2012) school year and to G.E. applicants whose home school is a No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Status school.
