Wai'alae School is a K-5 elementary school located in the Kaimuki section of East Honolulu. In 1995, the school became Hawai'i's first Student-Centered School and then four years later, with the passage of Hawai'i's "charter school law," evolved into a New Century Public Charter School.

Our Students

It has been said that the best thing about Wai‘alae School is its students.

Wai‘alae School's enrollment hovers around 400 to 425 students. Of that number, approximately 50% come from outside the school's geographic boundaries. Much like our state, they represent many ethnic/cultural backgrounds -- Japanese, Chinese, Caucasian, Hawaiian, part-Hawaiian, Filipino, Korean, Portuguese, Samoan, and others. Most come from lower-middle to middle income households where roughly 75% reside with both parents.

Our Faculty

The mission of the educational faculty is to facilitate student learning in a democratic environment in order for students to develop into effective and responsible citizens.

Wai‘alae School prides itself on having a highly committed and caring professional teaching faculty. The administration consists of a Chief Educational Officer and a Dean of Students. Currently, there are twenty-three classroom teachers plus teachers for art, music, physical education, Hawaiian studies, special education, and ESLL (English for Second Language Learners). The teachers are supported by a Curriculum Coordinator, a Technology Coordinator, a Counselor, and a Student Services Coordinator.

Our Support Staff

A school could not function without the services of able and dedicated support staffers. Wai‘alae's administration is supported by a School Administrative Services Assistant (SASA), a Business Manager, a Registrar, a Clerk, and a School-Parent-Community Networking Center Coordinator. Facilites are maintained by a Facilities Manager and a crew of four. Meal service at Wai`alae is provided by Sodexho Campus Services. Sodexho prepares breakfast, lunch, and a morning snack on school days. Wai‘alae also enjoys support from a team of para-professionals, educational assistants, lunchroom supervisors, and other part-time and casual hire personnel.

Our Parents and Community

On any given day, at any given time, parents and community volunteers can be observed around our school campus being involved in children's learning by helping the school, teachers, or students. They may be tutoring students, coaching, doing clerical tasks, fundraising, chaperoning field trips, or organizing and participating in projects and activities. Parents get involved either individually or through organized groups such as the Friends of Wai‘alae School (FWS), classroom learning hui, and governance boards and committees.

Very often, persons from the community with no "child connection" to Wai‘alae volunteer their time, energy, and expertise to the school. Their interest in supporting public education and helping children are greatly appreciated.

FELLOWS
A Very Special Group of Volunteers

Wai'alae School is very fortunate to host FELLOWS, a program for active seniors in our community interested in helping children and schools. FELLOWS members provide tutoring, mentoring, assistance, and love to Wai'alae students and enrich student learning with their invaluable life experiences and wisdom.
