Message from the CEO – December 2011

Thinking of Susie Kim, a Wai’alae School teacher………

Recently, I had the pleasure of addressing a group of University of Hawaii students who are entering into student teaching next semester.  Wai’alae School is home to the largest cohort of undergraduate student teachers from the University.  The Partnership and Placement Coordinator at the College of Education, Aaron Levine, asked me to share my expectation of student teachers.  Research says the single most important ingredient in student success is a good teacher.

As I prepared my remarks, I realized that what I expect from Wai’alae teachers is the same thing I expect from Wai’alae students.  I’m looking for teachers who reflect the vision of our school.

Wai’alae students and teachers are lifelong learners and well-rounded individuals capable of multiple dimensions who demonstrate flexibility in thinking; reflect on and assess themselves and make adjustments when necessary to meet their goals; communicate effectively; and actively pursue knowledge.

Wai’alae students and teachers are creative problem solvers who respond appropriately; demonstrate resourcefulness, resilience, and persistence in finding solutions.

Wai’alae students and teachers are self-confident risk takers who express and act on personal convictions, behave proactively, and demonstrate resiliency.

Wai’alae students and teachers are collaborative individuals who use strong interpersonal skills to share and contribute ideas; listen to multiple perspectives and honor diversity; work cooperatively to facilitate the progress of the group, and support group decisions.

Wai’alae students and teachers are socially responsible citizens who reflect on their own behavior and strive to be considerate and caring of others; take responsibility for making informed decisions and for consequences of those decisions; actively contribute to the good of the community; strive to understand and demonstrate and establish good behavior; and are aware of global interdependence and the consequences of change by individual and community actions.

On the next morning I received an email from the supervisor of the University student teacher cohort assigned to Wai’alae School.  I share it with you as a tribute to Susie Kim, our long time third grade teacher who recently passed away.  Ms. Kim was a mentor teacher to many young teachers.  It was her guidance and no nonsense manner that supported their growth as teachers and individuals.

Wendy, I keep thinking about what you said today to our students.  The ideal teacher you described — a lifelong and passionate learner, a self confident risk taker, a person who cares deeply for children and for the school, the community, and the world –was Susie through and through.  I feel so fortunate to have worked with someone who truly poured her whole being into her teaching.

Thank you Susie.  We will miss you.
